The second workshop organized in support of the Smart Grids Big Data Spoke project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) was held at 
Texas A&M 
University on May 8, 2018. Information on the first similar workshop held at April 18, 2017, and more information including the agenda with presentation slides and photos can be found here.
The goals of the recent workshop was reporting on the progress of the project and focusing on the tasks of future collaborations. The event highlighted emerging research field through an invited speech given by Mark Smith ( Advisor, Emerging Technologies (Data Analytics), Electric Power Research Institute) and a keynote speech presented by H.E. Eng. Essa B
in Hilal Al-Kuwari, President, Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA), Qatar. Four panels and four focus groups 
provided lively discussions among more than 140 participants on current research needs. Moreover a poster session displaying 21 posters gave a platform for individual discussions between graduate students and visitors. The best poster presentations selected by reviewers have
been awarded $300, $200, $100. The winners were Qin (Judy) Yan from TAMU (1st place), Pengyuan Wang from Ohio State University (2nd place), and Tatjana Dokic from TAMU (3rd place).
The event was well attended by 48 faculty members, 14 postdocs and staff, 55 students, and 15 representatives from industry (ABB, CNP, EPG, ComEd, Esri, GE, Landis+Gyr), government entities (NREL, PNNL), and non-profit organizations (EPRI, ERCOT).
Travel grants funded by NSF provided exceptional opportunities for 38 individuals to attend the workshop by offsetting travel expenses. These travel grant recipients included 14 graduate students, 15 younger professionals, such as postdocs, researchers, lecturers, assistant and associate professors, and 9 professors.
