Dr. J. Martin Scholtz is the Executive Associate Vice President for Research at Texas A&M University. He is also a Professor of Biochemistry & Biophysics and a Professor of Molecular & Cellular Medicine in the Texas A&M Health Science Center. Before becoming Associate Vice President, he served for six years as Chair of the Department of Molecular & Cellular Medicine in the College of Medicine of the Texas A&M Health Science Center.
Dr. Scholtz graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1984 and earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California-Berkeley in 1989 working with Professor Paul A. Bartlett. Dr. Scholtz was a postdoctoral fellow at the School of Medicine at Stanford University from 1989 until 1993 in the laboratory of Professor Robert L. Baldwin.
Dr. Scholtz joined Texas A&M in 1993 as an assistant professor of Medical Biochemistry and Genetics in the College of Medicine. He also joined the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences as an associate member in 1993. Dr. Scholtz was promoted to Associate Professor and granted tenure in 1999. He became a full professor in 2004 in the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Genetics, as well as in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics.
Dr. Scholtz’s research program has focused on fundamental studies on the folding, stability and solubility of proteins and peptides. His research activities have been supported by the National Institutes of Health, The American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association, The Robert A. Welch Foundation, Amgen, Inc. and The Advanced Research Program of the State of Texas. He has received multiple awards from across the country, including being named an Established Investigator of the American Heart Association, a Montague Scholar by the Center for Teaching Excellence at Texas A&M and the recipient of the Teacher/Scholar Award from the University Honors program.
