Authors:

J. Duncan Glover, Ph.D., is currently President and Principal Engineer Failure Electrical, LLC. Dr. Glover specializes in issues pertaining to electrical engineering, particularly as they relate to failure analysis of electrical systems, subsystems, and components, including causes of electrical fires.  His expertise covers electric power systems, generation, transmission, distribution, power system planning, extra high voltage design, power system dynamics assessment, and computer-aided design.

Thomas Overbye, Ph.D., is the Professor and holder of the O’Donnell Foundation Chair III, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University and also the director of TEES Smart Grid Center.  He is also the main developer of the PowerWorld(R) Simulator computer package, and a founder of PowerWorld(R) Corporation. He is the recipient of several teaching and research honors, including the BP Amoco Award for Innovation in Undergraduate Education, the Alexander Schwarzkopf Prize for Technological Innovation, and a University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering Distinguished Achievement Award.

Mulukutla S. Sarma, Ph.D., is the author of numerous technical articles published in leading journals, including the first studies of methods for computer-aided analysis of three-dimensional nonlinear electromagnetic field problems as applied to the design of electrical machinery. Dr. Sarma is a Life-Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of IEE and IEE, a reviewer of several IEEE Transactions, a member of the IEEE Rotating Machinery Committee, and a member of several other professional societies. He is also a Professional Engineer in the State of Massachusetts.

Adam B. Birchfield, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Prior to this he was a research engineer at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). He received the B.E.E. degree from Auburn University in 2014, M.S. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2016, and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University in 2018. Dr. Birchfield’s research is in power system modeling, large system transient dynamics, applications of synthetic power grid datasets, and the resilience of power systems to high-impact, low-frequency events.
